VOLUMES OF SILENCE AND NOISE

Audio performance, 45 min

in collaboration with Thomas Peter, composer

What does an intimate space sound like? The intimate space as a sonic shell, a place of silence whose extremely sensitive construction is revealed in the nuanced control of domestic background noise and its ultimate disruption. A balancing act between comfort and interruption. Based on a scientific text by Brandon Labelle (Acoustic Territories), musician and composer Thomas Peter used field recordings to create an archive of intimacy and silence. Visual artist and performer Olivia Wiederkehr's work deals with the fragility of the spaces that surround us every day. She also created a visual archive related to intimate spaces. During the performance, the two artists juxtaposed their archives in a scenographic setting. This resulted in visual and acoustic loops: sometimes they circle each other, sometimes they condense, or systematically pass each other by. The fragility inherent in the chosen theme is the possibility of rapid interruption: a small moment can disturb or even destroy intimacy and silence.
